Wow this a very depressing poem! This person has been stripped of all her hope, love, and happiness. It does not however tell us why, so we have to guess. I'm thinking she is either a widow or just went through an immense breakup. One line that really got to me was " A heart too weary even to throb, Too bruised to break." To me, this line almost mean tthat she wanted to die. She has gone through some many hard times that there was no possible way that she could even feel anymore. This touched me and made me feel sad for her. She is not worried anymore for she has worried enough, she can't cry anymore because her eyes are dry of tears, and she doesn't appreciate the good little things because she feels that they are not real and once she has something that she likes it will be taken away from her. When she says " As voices we have known and loved speak in a dream" I believe she is talking about a loved one who died. The only time she can hear or feel them is in a dream. I was confused with the last couple of verses. At the end when she says " This darkened, deathly life is all remains of me, and but one conscious wish- to cease to be!" Does this mean that she wants to kill herself? Gosh why do all of these poems have to be so negative. I just hope know that I will never get to a point like that in my life because I have an amazing family, a beautiful home, and I appreciate the little things. I also try to stay positive and replace my negative thoughts with a positive one. Although of course no one is always happy, when I do get upset it usually doesn't last for too long.
Yeah, this is really depressing. No love, no hope or dreams. But wow what a vivid image she creates!! My favorite stanza was "No longer anxious thoughts, No longer hopes and fears, No strife, no effort, no desire, No tears." It just kind of hit me. Like she's so upset she can't even cry. She's numb of all feelings and emotions. Jamie, I think your right when you say she was just widowed. Death is a crazy thing, and hits people so hard. The poem kind of made me think she was still in disbelief over the death that had happend. That she is still in denial.
When I read this poem I felt like I was about to cry! It is very depressing! I've personally never been in love before, but I know someone who has. Love is such a powerful emotion. To be in love is so wonderful that even words can't describe, but to be heartbroken is something that needs to be healed in time. No matter what no one can forget their first love and I don't mean first crush, because a crush is a feeling entirely different from love. What I'm getting at is that the person in this poem poured her heart out with love to this person and now the fact that they are gone brings her so much grief that she can no longer cry. She feels as if she's nothing but an empty shell. I think Jaime is right on this part that she wants to kill herself, because she feels as though there is nothing left for her in the world. I have also never experienced to be this depressed. But of course I've experienced being depressesed. The longest I have ever been depressed for was for I believe about a month. But now the past is the past and I'm content with my life now and looking in a more positive direction!
Emotion is DEFINITELY a factor in this. The romantic era shines through. This depressing tone sets the mood for the poem. The subject of the poem has been hurt so bad, that she feels her heart is too ruined to work. (The quote Jamie mentioned). It sounds like this person lost someone or something every close to them. It is evident that she is suffering. The power of love clearly drives this romantic poem.
